The law only requires the use of a helmet in all circumstances and gloves outside urban areas. But common sense suggests that you should wear more than the legal minimum, and proper gear including a jacket, gloves, pants, and boots is essential to minimize injuries in any accident. We always recommend using the appropriate gear for motorcycle touring, although sometimes, far from home, you might consider clothing that is not specifically designed for motorcycle use, but that fulfills minimum protective functions. The basic gear includes a jacket that protects against cold and abrasions, sports gloves, and tall boots.
