If you come to Spain eager to ride a motorcycle during your vacation, scenic roads, sun, and culture await you. But, before you get on your rental bike and start the engine, you must ensure that your driver’s license is legally valid.
The key to a trip without problems with the authorities is understanding the requirements for the international driving permit in Spain. This document is fundamental for many tourists. Get ready for the route and avoid surprises with this essential guide!
What do I need to drive in Spain as a tourist?
If your country does not belong to the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), you will need, in most cases, two fundamental documents to drive in Spain:
- Your National Driving License: It must be valid and authorized for the class of vehicle you wish to ride (for example, Class A for motorcycles).
- The International Driving Permit (IDP): This document does not replace your national license but acts as an official translation. You must always carry it together with your original license and identification document.
IMPOSTRTANT: The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) of Spain establishes that, as a tourist (non-resident), you can drive in the country with your foreign license and the IDP, provided that the maximum period of six months has not elapsed since your entry into Spain.
How to get the International Driving Permit?
You must be very clear on this point: the International Driving Permit (IDP) is requested in your country of habitual residence, not in Spain.
If you are a tourist coming from outside the EU/EEA, apply for your IDP at the traffic authority or authorized body in your country before traveling.
Ellos te expedirán el documento en formato de libreta, que es reconocido internacionalmente. Tu permiso de conducir nacional debe estar en vigor en el momento de solicitar el PIC.
Is it difficult to obtain the International Driving Permit?
It is not complicated if you meet the basic requirements. What can prolong the process is:
- Not having a valid driving license.
- Not having the necessary documentation (recent photo, translation if applicable, identification).
- Not using the proper application channels.
However, compared to obtaining a new license, the international permit is a fairly straightforward procedure. You will not have to take driving exams or additional medical tests for this purpose.
The difficulty lies solely in the bureaucratic requirements and the waiting times of your country’s traffic authority.
How long is the International Driving Permit valid in Spain?
The International Driving Permit (IDP) is valid for one year from the date of issue. However, for a tourist in Spain, the actual driving validity with that permit is limited: it is only valid during the first six months of your stay in the country.
If you plan to reside in Spain, you must initiate the process of exchanging or obtaining a Spanish license.
Can I drive in Spain with a Mexican or Argentine license?
Yes, you can drive in Spain with your Mexican or Argentine license, but you must be aware of the specific conditions:
- Mexican licence: Mexico does not have a bilateral exchange agreement with Spain. Therefore, as a tourist, it is MANDATORY that your Mexican license be accompanied by the International Driving Permit (IDP) and it is only valid during the first six months of your stay.
- Argentine diving Licence: Argentina does have an exchange agreement with Spain. This means that your Argentine license is valid for driving until you acquire normal residence in Spain (six months).
Although the law does not strictly require it for short stays, carrying the IDP is strongly recommended as a safety measure, as it is the recognized official translation. If your license is not written in Spanish, the IDP or an official translation is essential.
What foreign permits are valid for driving in Spain?
The DGT accepts as valid for driving in Spain driving licenses that meet the following conditions:
- Permits issued in countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway).
- Permits from countries that have a bilateral agreement with Spain (such as Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, etc.).
- Permits issued in countries that do not have an agreement with Spain, but which comply with the International Driving Permit model (Geneva or Vienna Conventions) or are written in Spanish. In these cases, the IDP is required, and the maximum validity is six months from your entry into the country.
